Sugarloaf announces major lift improvement

Just two days after Sugarloaf re-opened its problematic Spillway East chairlift, general manager John Diller announced plans to replace both Spillway lifts next season with a brand-new fixed-grip quad, complete with a magic carpet loading system to reduce lift stoppage time. The total cost for the new lift will be around $3 million.

The new lift has been designed to be as wind-resistent as possible. The Spillway East chair, of course, made national news in December when high winds caused it to de-rope. Deconstruction of the existing Spillway lift is scheduled to begin in May, following the completion of the current ski season. Construction of the new lift is expected to be completed by November.

The installation of a new Spillway lift had been a major component when Sugarloaf’s “2020” campaign was announced last summer. The 10-year plan will double Sugarloaf in size, making it the largest resort in the East.
