Fool’s gold – April 1 ski deals

A number of New England areas have hung up the old, depressing “Closed for the season” sign, with a good deal more to come over the next week or so. This week’s deluge of rain won’t help any potential of seeing May, though we hold out hope.

The good news, at least, is that after this three-day storm, spring temperatures return, with highs in the 60’s and 70’s predicted. Again, while that won’t help preserve the snowpack, it should at least provide for one killer weekend of spring skiing.

If you’re inclined to kick things off early (and why wouldn’t you be?), a quartet of mountains are offering lift ticket deals for April 1. It’s 2-for-1 at Bromley ($39 regular, midweek rate, so $19.50 per person). With three cans of non-perishable foods (to benefit the Black River Good Neighbors’ food bank in Ludlow, Vt.) it’ll cost just $10 to ski at Okemo (it was free last year, but hey, $10). WatervilleValley will run you a buck to ski on Thursday.

Thursday also brings Mad River Glen’s “Roll Back the Clock” promotion, rescheduled from earlier this season. Skiers – no riders – can ride the lifts for the original 1949 price of $3.50. The mountain is closed through Wednesday, but will re-open for the event on Thursday, and end its season on Sunday.
