Weather Talk – MLK Weekend

Cold air is a good thing for skiers and riders.

The mountains can make snow at will. Any precipitation event is more than likely snow. Still, what is going to happen later this week is just downright brutal.

Ski Report: So far this month has been perfect.

• No rain
• Grade of a B- for snowfall totals
• Lots of Cold Air

Q: Are we looking at the first January in a long time without a thaw in New England?
Truth is, the long-range forecasts taking us deep into the month are not showing any warm up in temperatures, at least to the point where the snow surface would suffer real damage. If this pattern of cold air and snow continues to hold, skiing in New England will be as good as anything available on the planet.
This Friday will be the coldest day in over a year.
Temperatures in Boston will struggle to get above the single digits.
Mind you, that is not considering any wind.
There is snow in the forecast. An unstable atmosphere plus a clipper should drop an additional 3-6 inches across most areas before you wake up to the deep freeze on Friday morning.
Local Secret: They (locals) do not like skiing in sub zero temperatures any more then you. Many people I know up north will turn to cross country skiing if they do man/woman up and venture outside. These cold temperatures will keep the always-sparse midweek skier and rider traffic on the slopes down. That means more fresh snow will hang around for you to find over the long MLK weekend!
Short Story: Conditions are Awesome and getting better over the next 48 hours. Weather is going to be chilly, bundle up and get out there to enjoy the squeaky, dry snow.
Here is to hoping we get more snow then what is forecast.
Stay warm,
S.G.
