Skiing

Holiday Speed Bumps

A week ago, the landscape of skiing in New England was substantially different then it is now. Since the two sizable snowstorms, the region has seen multiple rain events and a lot of warm air.

Unfavorable weather was just about the only thing that would have put a damper on the holiday spirits for skiers and riders. We got a good dose of just that.

Is it just me, or does this happen every year?

Conditions: The snow reports are all over the place – LINK. Many mountains are listing VC (Variable Conditions) which is probably the most accurate way to be. LSGR/FRGR (Loose/Frozen Granular) is also a popular option. It really boils down to this – the open trails are those that have snowmaking and are groomable. There will be ice out there. All the terrain that relies on the natural snow is on hold until we get some more form the heavens.
Good News: There is snow in the forecast! The cold air is back after a few days that seemed more like early April rather than late December. Not quite sure on how much snowfall there will be or where it will end up falling, but it is a safe bet the skiing will improve as we gear up to head into 2009.
Stay tuned for more updates. If you are heading out Tuesday for turns – bundle up and sharpen the edges.
Think Snow,
