Just another Snow Storm
Sure it is April, but that does not change the fact that you Need to Be Ready. When it gets good you need to head to the mountains. This is New England so take advantage of great ski conditions whenever you can. This storm crushed certain ski areas.
Remember, it is still snowing up north. Early reports Thursday morning are indicating that the Greens of Vermont and the Whites of New Hampshire both got snow. Most of the open areas logging a foot plus of heavy, sticky, snowball snow from the events start yesterday morning.
The big winners are the Maine ski areas.
Sunday River is reporting 20 – 27 inches since Wednesday as of 6:16 am on 4/5! Sugarloaf & Saddleback have yet to chime in, but use this LINK to keep an eye on updates throughout the day.
How to ski it?
Stick to the trails with snowmaking. At this stage of the game most terrain has exposed rocks and obstacles. Or at least it did on Wednesday morning. The bounties of wet snow that is plastering the mountains will cover much of the ugliness up. But be warned, there will not be a very forgiving cushion in-between allowing room for error. So, if you want to finish the season with skis that still have somewhat functional edges I very much recommend staying on the open trails.
Conditions will be midwinter like (and should remain that way until next weekend). This is a huge encore for New England ski fanatics. This weekend and then the next are going to be exceptional. No doubt about it. We were due and here it is, I hope you are ready.
S.G. Pick: I think some of the best skiing in the lower 48 states will be at Saddleback, ME in the next several days. I am not going to be able to make it up that way, but if you can you should. Bring a camera.
This – off the map – ski area scored more snow before the storm than anyone. Saddleback marked up 15” in the last 72 hours as of 4:48 pm on 4/4/07. I would bet they pile on another two feet from last night into this afternoon. They should be skiing 100% of their terrain in powder!
Keep an eye on what they and everyone else still open report in hours/days ahead. LINK
Everywhere is going to be skiing well. Again, stick to the open trials that had some base prior to the new snow for best results.
Enjoy the present from the Easter Snow Bunny,
S.G.
PS ~ it is April, and more cold air (maybe more snow) is on tap for all next week.
