Skiing

Super Bowl Weekend

The skiing and riding is very good in New England. Honest, Serious, for Real. We currently are experiencing the best conditions so far this season! Percentages of open terrain have been on a steady climb as the mountains up north have had over two weeks of consistently good snowmaking weather. Check this LINK to find out how your favorite resort is doing.

The mountains have been picking up an inch of two day to day form lake effect snows. It all counts. The steady small shots of snow are the best way for bases to become and remain Packed Powder. We have not had any rain events to speak of. All we need is one big storm and things will go bananas. Big = a foot plus for most resorts. That is not being too greedy is it? I mean, come on. It is February first today.

There is snow in the forecast for Friday. Different reports are bringing contradicting outcomes, but most agree that something is going to happen and that it will most likely bring more than a few inches to Southern New England.
Jim Roemer of Best Ski Weather is not saying anything with 100% confidence on this disorganized system. But he does believe the mountains of southern VT will make out the best from tonight and tomorrows precipitation event. On the extremely good side would be 5 to 8 inches. Lake effect snows are taking care of things further north. He is also calling for some wind and the artic chill to return on Monday. So bring your warm clothes this weekend and get out there to enjoy.
What is going on this weekend? The Super Bowl certainly is not quiet as exciting without the Patriots. But, as I do every year, I have taken Monday off from work and plan on skiing. I will watch the game. Not really sure who to route for yet, but thinking Chicago. We’ll see…

This is the S.G. pick for the weekend! Stowe is always a great place to watch the game with friends. With this ticket special Friday and the resort having some of the best conditions in the country (yes – you read that right) why not make a long weekend out of this?
Stowe Mountain Resort dares to ask the question: How much woods could a woodchuck ski, if a woodchuck could ski woods? Find out in Stowe on Friday, February 2nd.
In most places people will call this Friday, February 2nd ‘Groundhog’s Day,’ but in Vermont it’s definitely ‘Woodchuck Day.’ Each year on this day, people around the country watch to see if winter might end early. In Stowe, everyone knows this winter just got a big boost, with over 3 Feet of new snow since January 13th.
Skiers and riders in Stowe also know that the best winter has to offer still lays ahead. So, Stowe invites all snow lovers to celebrate the beginning of the rest of winter, and experience the best conditions and terrain in the east.
Full-day lift tickets will be only $35, and the first 500 people to show up also get a free Stowe Points Card, that’s over a hundred bucks worth of free fun. This February 2nd, don’t focus on Punxsutawney, obsess about winter in Stowe. You can’t afford not too!
Sugarbush, VT
Taking a skiers approach to the game…
Warren, VT (January 31, 2007)- The Life-Link Ski Mountaineering Race Series is coming back to Vermont’s Mad River Valley. A national race series sanctioned by the United States Ski Mountaineering Association (USSMA), the Life-Link races are held at some of the premier resorts in North America including such backcountry havens as Crested Butte, CO and Jackson Hole, WY. Last year marked the first time a race was held east of the Rockies when Sugarbush and Mad River Glen in central Vermont hosted an event. This year’s race will be held Sunday, February 4th.
The race series test competitors’ endurance, equipment and skiing skills while skinning up and skiing down some of the toughest terrain around the country. And the Sugarbush/MRG event will prove to be one of the burliest.
Competitors will begin at the base of Mad River Glen and skin up the Antelope Slope. Once to the summit, they will traverse the Long Trail to Sugarbush’s Mt. Ellen where they will descend into the Slide Brook Basin via Rim Run, Lower Rim Run, and Lower F.I.S.
After traversing through the Slide Brook area, competitors will take one of two routes—the recreational division ascending Village Run to the base of the North Lynx chair while the race division ascends up work roads to the summit of North Lynx chair and then down to the base of that chair via Birch Run.
The rest of the course is downhill with racers in both divisions continuing on Castlerock Connection, through Header, and down to the finish at the Valley House by way of the Lower Jester and Coffee Run trails.
“We’re really psyched to again be the only eastern venue to host this event,” remarked adventure skier and head of Sugarbush’s Adventure Learning Center John Egan. “The terrain that lies between Sugarbush Resort and Mad River Glen is extremely challenging, it ranks up there with some of the most technical descents I’ve done around the world.”
The event is open to skiers, telemarkers, and split-board snowboarders, and will feature some of the fastest ski mountaineering racers in the U.S. Registration information can be found at sugarbush.com or by calling or emailing Sugarbush’s Laura Worthen at 583_6849 [email protected].
