The Inbox
Well folks it is raining and none of us can do a thing about it. The good news is all the green on the radar screens should be changing to blue in the next 24 hours. The New Year’s weekend is not lost. The resorts with the best snowmaking and grooming operations will be your best bets for early morning corduroy.
Here are some questions that hit the inbox this week. Enjoy and for crying out loud, THINK SNOW! PRAY for SNOW! Do a dance or something…

Hello- My wife is “calf Challanged” We are having a tough time finding boots for her. Do you know of a model or Brand that is known to cater to such situations.
thanks
S.G. Well since you were man enough to actually write in that your wife is “calf Challanged” I will give you what I can for advice.
I have skied before with someone who suffered the same predicament your wife is in. I watched this person—very strong skier—suffer each run down, even having to stop multiple times. He is happy with his new boots (a pair of Salomon’s) and has not had the pain issues, rendered him useless, since the purchase.
Basics: Do not tuck anything into the boot. When you wear ski boots you need a pair of good ski socks.
So you might as well start with Salomon and keep trying on NEW boots of different makes and models. They all fit differently. Buy the most comfortable pair. For starters head to a store/shop that has a large selection and a knowledgeable sales staff. You may need to have some custom work done to them for her (it is pricey) and it will be worth it.
Best of luck

I haven’t skied in 20 years. Now I am ready for the slopes. Am I going to look ridiculous in 20 year old equipment or should I invest in the latest in ski technology. I also heard the new style ski’s are easier to ski in. Is that true.
Thanks
S.G. How you look depends more on the way you ski. If you go out there and absolutely nail it in twenty year old garb you will not only look, but most likely be, the coolest skier on the mountain.
It is true. Ski equipment has come a long way in the past couple decades. The new gear will make you a better skier.

Can you fire Lucchino?
S.G. Negative. Think football, works well with skiing and riding out bad weather spells.

S.G. Readers – this is from a friend who works at Wachusset. I sympathize with all ski area employees when it rains.
Personally, rain in the winter is my least favorite weather.
Raise a glass to SNOW for 2006 this weekend.

what is considered the best ski resort in New Hampshire in terms of both having great skiing and a nice ‘town’. IN Vermont Stowe is my favorite: both nice, cosy town and great skiing. Thanks for your time. Peter
S.G. To say the “best” is difficult. NH has three very strong options. Depends on what you are after really. A brief take on each…
Lincoln, NH – Good scene. Younger crowd that likes to party. It has tons of nightlife options and plenty of places to stay. If you like the terrain at Stowe then Cannon will be your best bet.
Loon (5 minute drive) – Cannon (20 min) – Waterville Valley (35 min)
Jackson, NH – A true skier village, low key relaxed atmosphere with great food and service. The entertainment is quaint, but quality. Outstanding option if you are more serious about actually skiing, opposed to just yapping ‘bout skiing in the bar.
Wildcat (10 min) – Black (5 min)
XC – Jackson
Backcountry – Galore
North Conway, NH – There is shopping for you friends that do not ski and plenty of it… You can pretty much find whatever you desire out of a ski town in North Conway, to me it falls in the middle of the two above.
Attitash (10 min) – Cranmore (2 min) – King Pine (10 min)

Ethan, my son is very tall and loves snow boarding. The problem is his shoe size-it is close to a size 16–and, you guessed it, it has become impossible to find him a properly fitted boot. Any suggestions? He does not want at all to go back to skiing. Thanks very much, signed frustrated father.
S.G. Got to Burton.com and find the Contact / Help link (top right corner). If you tell them your problem as stated above and they can not help you…well then I think you may be out of luck.
I highly doubt that Mr. Carpenter’s snowboard company will fail you in your quest for size 16’s…but if they do I would like to know about it.
Fact: skiing is wicked cool compared to snowboarding!
