Good news from the Doctor

Dr. Weather that is, snows and cold air in the forecast for the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday! Those with plans to hit the slopes are shape for some excitement. It is about time, after that early season tease a few weeks back when we saw flakes in Boston pre Halloween we should all welcome a dose of good cold weather and some real snowfall in the mountains.

Here is the release…his website www.bestskiweather.com should be up and running sometime soon. I would reckon it will have a much different look and feel than in seasons past.

JIM ROEMER SAYS, “AFTER RAINS NEXT 24 HRS-MAJOR PATTERN CHANGE TOWARDS COLD AND SOME SNOW ON THE WAY FOR EASTERN SKI RESORTS”
Big warmth will be returning to the western U.S. later this week, and especially next week, with the Tahoe region, and Cascades to British Columbia seeing temperatures as much as 19-20 degrees above normal.
This will not bode well for an early ski season in those areas. Instead, after rains that will fall over the next 24 hours across New England, a “very important” change is on tap, consistent with what we have been saying this last week–our confidence is 70-80% that improved snow-making conditions will begin after this rain event, beginning Thursday and persist mostly till the end of the month. Granted, there may be some days that warm well into the 30’s and 40’s over the next week, especially below 2,000 feet, but temperatures will spend at least part of the time, below normal.
The big changes occur around the 21st when a possible nor’easter could affect the White Mountains, and possibly Maine with a modest snow event. If the storm travels further west, the Green Mountains will also see some.
With the intrusion of colder air, I still look for at least some snow later this week or early next week, and then the fun begins.
The attached map represents some of the coldest late November air in years. The blue arrow shows the polar flow diving into the Midwest before Thanksgiving. In response, a very deep low pressure system (L) will form over southern Quebec. This is a perfect situation for a bout of below to much below normal temperatures around and after Thanksgiving, with numerous chances for Lake Effect and/or a possible nor’easter before the end of the month.
