A Cambridge restaurant known for capturing the spirit of one of the city’s most influential culinary residents, Julia Child, is now being considered one of the best new restaurants in the country by Eater.

Shepard, located at 1 Shepard St., was the only area eatery to make Eater’s list of “21 Best New Eateries in America.” The restaurants on the list opened between May 2015 and May 2016.

Eater’s restaurant editor, Bill Addison, said Shepard made his list because it “feels immediately like a community haven — a restaurant where hip couples and tweedy university types alike come to linger in a calm, open room.” Addison said some of his favorite dishes from the restaurant included the smoky chicken wings and seafood chowder.

Rene Becker, of Hi-Rise Bread Company, and renowned area chef Susan Regis, run the restaurant that opened in June of last year. Regis, who was mentored by Child, pays homage to her friend with the restaurant’s decor, which includes an open hearth and pegboard hung with cookware.

Shepard also received a glowing review by The Boston Globe in 2015.

“Regis is one of the purest cooking talents around, her instinct for flavor, texture, and just plain loveliness bolstered by a devotion to craft,” the review said. “Becker brings perfectionism and an exacting eye to the front of the house.”
