“Nothing fancy.”

That’s how Esquire‘s David Wondrich describes Croke Park (aka Whitey’s Pub) on the magazine’s list of the 18 best bars in America.

The South Boston landmark, which describes itself as “Boston’s #1 Dive Bar,” left a lasting impression on Wondrich—or at least what he can remember of his excursion in the city.

I do my best to exercise good—okay, goodish—judgment when I’m touring barrooms, but every once in a while, a gear slips a tooth and dosages get miscalculated. Whitey’s is a slipped tooth, a place I was introduced to by some Boston bartenders. I have dim memories of having an excellent time—doing big shots of Irish whiskey, writing on the walls, rolling dice, joking around with the regulars.

Whitey’s wasn’t the only local watering hole to get a shout out.

Drink on Congress Street was named in the “General Excellence” category. Locals would agree—it’s the sixth most popular bar in Boston, according to check-in data.
