It’s been a cold start to 2015 in New England, with below zero wind chills forcing schools and even a ski resort to close last week. But folks in North Dakota would probably tell us to stop whining.

That’s because Grand Forks and Fargo, N.D., have been named the coldest cities in the land, according to Niche, a data website, which calculated a list of the 50 Coldest Cities in America. The results are based on average low temperatures calculated with the help of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), based on cities with a population of at least 50,000. The coldest city in America, Grand Forks, boasts an average low temperature of 6.3 degrees. Brrr!

But New England certainly has bragging rights when it comes to the cold (and also when it comes to snow, but more on that in a bit). Two of our cities placed in the top 50 coldest (with five more placing in the top 100). Manchester, N.H. is the coldest city in New England, according to the list. It came in at No. 23 with an average low temperature of 17.6 degrees.

Escape the Manchester cold this winter in the Currier Museum of Art.

Portland, Maine is the second coldest city in New England, coming in at No. 28 with a low temperature of 18.8 degrees.

These two cities are not only the coldest but they are also among the snowiest in America. Niche’s list of the Top 50 Snowiest Cities in America includes those cities as well as four other New England cities (once again, with a population over 50,000). New England’s snowiest city is Worcester, with an average snowfall of 58.5 inches.

Check out where other New England cities fare when it comes to the white stuff:

No. 11: Worcester (average snowfall of 58.5 inches)

No. 12: Portland, Maine (average snowfall of 57.2 inches)

No. 15: Manchester, N.H. (average snowfall of 52 inches)

No. 31: Boston (average snowfall 40.6 inches)

No. 40: Hartford, Conn. (average snowfall 37.1 inches)

No. 41: Springfield (average snowfall 37.1 inches)
