Snowboarding, singing, and skiing Santas invaded Sunday River in Maine over the weekend for the 15th Annual Santa Sunday charity event. One Santa even breakdanced for the cause.

Chants of “Ho ho ho,’’ “Happy Holidays,’’ and “Merry Christmas’’ echoed through the mountain as 250 Santa suit-clad skiers and snowboarders shredded for charity.

The event raised $2,832 for the Sunday River Community Fund, which improves the quality of life in the Sunday River communities of Newry, Bethel, Hanover, Andover, Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Greenwood, Woodstock, Albany, and Gilead. Last year, the skiing Santas raised more than $2,100 for the Bethel Rotary holiday toy drive.

Santa’s must pre-register for the much-anticipated event, which has landed Sunday River on the Travel Channel. They are required to ski in a red Santa hat with a white pompom, a red Santa jacket, red Santa pants, a Santa beard, and donate $15 or more to the cause. In exchange, the Santas receive a lift ticket that is valid until 11 a.m. on event day. After participating in a photo shoot at 11 a.m., the participants are issued another lift ticket valid through December 19. The event is so popular that the 250 skiing Santa spots were booked in just 3 minutes, according to Sunday River’s website.

We’re thinking the organizers and recipients were pretty jolly over that.
