Do You Recognize This Historic Massachusetts Town Common?

Where is this Worcester County historic town common located? John Burk

This picturesque common, decorated for the holidays, is located in a serene Massachusetts town in Worcester County. The town, settled in 1733, offers thousands of acres of conservation land perfect for hiking, bird watching, bicycling, and other outdoor fun.

This well-known historic common was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and continues to delight visitors, as evidenced by numerous positive online reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp. One TripAdvisor reviewer posted this in August:

“[Name of town] is the perfect New England town — splendid Gothic revival houses surrounding a gazebo, and two wonderful Benedictine monasteries that share a common chapel (where they sing Gregorian Chant). Now visitors to [name of town] (whether in or out of the gorgeous leaf-peeping season) can enjoy the wonderfully restored Country Store — it’s part old-fashioned General Store, part high-fashion gourment & artisanal food (and crafts). A great treat.’’

John Burk, a New England photographer, grew up in this town and took the above photo.

Here’s what Burk told Boston.com about the shot: “The town center is on a high ridge that makes it well situated to catch morning light and sunsets. The common is part of a historic district that includes a unique library, churches, and a popular country store. The image was taken at sunset with a Canon digital camera with a long exposure on a tripod.’’
