This New England Lighthouse Was Home to a Celebrity Cat. Where Is It?

This lighthouse is located in which New England state? Bryan Bzdula Photography

This 40-foot high New England lighthouse, built in 1871, sits on a one-half acre islet and was once home to a cat that made headlines across the country.

Adolph Aronson was the keeper of the lighthouse from 1908 until 1937. According to newenglandlighthouses.net, he lived at the lighthouse with his family and a cat named Tommy. Tommy was rescued as a kitten on the mainland by Aronson’s son. The frisky feline achieved celebrity cat status in the early 1930s for his fishing expertise. A Jan. 30, 1931 headline from The Chronicle-Telegram in Ohio read, “Cat Dives Into Sea for Fish.’’

Tommy would dive into the water (sometimes you could only see the tip of his tail) to make a catch. Then he’d emerge from the water and stack his caught fish in a pile under a lilac bush.

Lifelong New Englander Bryan Bzdula, of Bryan Bzdula Photography , is known for his dramatic seascapes. He lives near this lighthouse and has photographed it several times.

Bzdula took this photo last week, telling Boston.com, “I planned to photograph the lighthouse on this particular day because the sun sets directly behind it this time of the year, the tide was low, which allowed me to get right on the water’s edge, and the sky was filled with dramatic clouds. Everything came together for me to make this image.’’

Do you know which New England state this lighthouse is located in? Can you name the lighthouse?
