This Patriots cheerleader’s SpongeBob costume was the real winner of Sunday’s game
When Patriots cheerleader Andrea Cadigan took the field for Sunday’s game between the Patriots and Chargers, a member of the special teams stopped by to let her know he thought her Halloween costume was great. Unfortunately, she couldn’t see who it was through her bright yellow, head-to-toe bodysuit.
Among Patriots cheerleaders dressed as superheroes and animals, Cadigan’s SpongeBob Squarepants costume stood out.

Turns out, it wasn’t the second-year cheerleader’s first choice for a costume.
According to Cadigan, each cheerleader brings three costume ideas to cheer coach Tracy Sormanti. Cadigan said Sormanti expressed doubts about her first two options — the Wacky Waving Arm Flailing Inflatable Tube Man and the Incredible Hulk — but SpongeBob got the green light.
“Coach Tracy thought it was more playful,” Cadigan said. “We do a lot of things with children, as well, like Junior Patriots Cheerleader Programs, so she thought SpongeBob was the most appropriate. I don’t think she realized I was going to take it to that extent, though.”
Cadigan said that she was initially planning on wearing the morph suit with the head down. But after Cadigan wore it with the head up at practice as a joke, the whole squad decided she had to keep it that way during the game.
“It 100 percent had to stay up,” Cadigan said. “It tied the whole costume together.”

Cadigan’s mother and sister were also Patriots cheerleaders so she has seen years’ worth of cheerleader Halloween costumes. She said she had never witnessed anyone wear a head-to-toe bodysuit or anything remotely like her costume.
“It was always the devil, an angel, some animals,” Cadigan said. “And they’re cute and fun and playful, which is good, but I’ve never seen anyone do what I did.”

Cadigan said fans had mixed reactions to the costume. Many cheered her on and sang lines from the SpongeBob Squarepants theme song to her. Others asked if she was wearing the costume as punishment, which she found hilarious.
Cadigan credited Sormanti and the team for letting her goofy personality shine through on the field.
“That’s why my coach liked it so much; I could just be myself,” Cadigan said. “I didn’t really care how people reacted to it. I was just out there being myself, which was the best part, for sure.”
