Watch: Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras perform ‘Ode to Joy’ virtually

Hundreds of students participated in the project, which took close to a month to complete.

Around 200 students from the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras contributed to a virtual rendition of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” shared online this week.

The young musicians represent most of an entire orchestra: violins, violas, cellos, and basses in the string section; clarinets, flutes, oboes, and bassoons in winds; and a whole bevy of brass. Forced apart in bedrooms, kitchens, and even bathrooms across the region, they came together to perform one of Beethoven’s finest works.

The project was organized by Federico Cortese, the music director of the BYSO, and the entire production took place in house, according to director of marketing and public relations Erin Keegan Ianni. Students have been participating in weekly virtual rehearsals because of the coronavirus pandemic, and they were invited to contribute to the performance at the end of March as an optional project.

Ianni said the full endeavor took close to a month to complete, and the final edit was uploaded to YouTube Monday.
