Esperanza Spalding releases her new album one track at a time
“It’s my gift to you.’’
Singer and jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding released the first song from her latest project “12 Little Spells’’ on Sunday. The Grammy-winning artist will unveil an additional song and accompanying video — or “spell’’ — every day on her website, Facebook, and Instagram at 12:12 p.m. EST until Oct. 18.
The songs were inspired by Spalding’s stay at an Italian castle last month and were recorded in Brooklyn a little less than two weeks before their release. Each “spell’’ was inspired by a different body part, she says, and explores the healing powers of art.
“I want to have a beneficial effect on your physiology, but it’s not my business what happens after that,’’ Spalding, a former instructor at Berklee College of Music, told Vanity Fair about her new project. “It’s my gift to you.’’
Spalding also plans on releasing details of 12 upcoming pop-up shows that would each be inspired by a different “spell.’’
Collaborators of the project include visual artist Carmen Daneshmandi, opera and theater director Elkhanah Pulitzer, wardrobe specialist Diego Montoya, and video artist Ethan Samuel Young.
A preorder for “12 Little Spells’’ will launch on Oct. 19.
Can’t get enough Spalding? John Legend recently announced that his first holiday album, “A Lengendary Christmas,’’ will feature cameos by Spalding and Stevie Wonder.
