Boston Symphony Orchestra kicks off its new season tonight
The Boston Symphony Orchestra is set to kick off its nine-month 2016-17 season Saturday evening with a rousing all-Russian opening night program, a preview of the jam-packed season ahead.
Andris Nelsons leads the orchestra in his third season as music director.
Opening night at Symphony Hall begins with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture. Then, all eyes are on critically acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
BSO closes the show with Maurice Ravel’s orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition. Ravel met former BSO music director Serge Koussevitzky many years ago, which inspired the arrangement.
Season highlights include a “dream cast” including Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Erin Morley, and Franz Hawlata performing Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier at the end of September; Eric Nathan and Timo Andres premiering new works paired with the music of Brahms in November; and, of course, a wide array of classical performances that follow, including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Mahler.
