Local Metal Guitarist Cleans Up on ‘Price Is Right’
We’ve heard a lot of stories lately about how hard it is to make a living in the music world, but no one seems to have thought of this simple solution until now: Win cash on a TV game show. It’s as good a workaround as any, and it seems to have paid off for Adam Dutkiewicz, guitarist of Killswitch Engage, a favorite of Massachusetts metalcore fans.
It’s probably safe to assume that most of the usual daytime viewing audience for The Price Is Right didn’t recognize the tall guy in the shorts and flip-flops (definitely not metal), but in the metal scene online, his appearance has been met with a hefty dose of bemusement.
Dutkiewicz certainly made an impression on the show, too. “Now that’s a Price Is Right contestant,’’ host Drew Carey joked as the musician ran around the stage screaming after his first win, in a clip captured by the website Metal Sucks.
Throughout the rest of the show, Dutkiewicz continues to ham it up, sending a shout out to his dog Steve. “This is, like, the best day of my life,’’ he tells Carey after moving on to the Showcase Showdown (from which another classic Boston-scene band took its name, incidentally). He wins there too, taking home a total of over $51,000 in cash and prizes, including two new cars, and laughing the whole way.
Probably not enough to quit his day job over – Dutkiewicz is a fixture in the metalcore scene for his production work for bands like Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying, and many others – but, certainly a lot quicker than slogging it out on the road.
