In one of the earlier awards to be given out at the 2019 Oscars, Ruth E. Carter took home the Best Costume Design statuette, making her the first black costume designer to do so.
Carter earned the award for her work on the 2018 blockbuster “Black Panther.” In her acceptance speech, she stated that “Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king.”
Born in Springfield, Carter is one of a few Academy Award nominees with local ties.
“This is for my 97-year-old mother watching in Massachusetts,” she said. “Mom, thank you for teaching me about people and their stories. You are the original superhero.”
Carter also thanked filmmaker Spike Lee for giving her her start. Carter has earned previous Academy Award nominations for her work on Lee’s 1992 film “Malcolm X,” as well as Steven Spielberg’s 1997 movie “Amistad.”
