Manchester by the Sea

nabbed six Academy Award nominations on Tuesday, and no one was more excited about it than the film’s rising star, 20-year-old Lucas Hedges.

Hedges told Entertainment Weekly that he was so nervous about the early-morning announcement that he tried to sleep through it, which is why he was in bed when he got a phone call with news of his nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

“I ran downstairs and told my parents and freaked out,” Hedges told EW.

Hedges isn’t the first in his family to be honored by the Academy. His father, Peter Hedges, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for About A Boy (2002).

“My dad hopped out of the shower and put some clothes on soaking wet and just started crying,” Hedges told People. “He was nominated for an Academy Award about 10 years ago, too, so I’m the second generation. It’s awesome.”

Hedges was not nominated for a Golden Globe for his Manchester performance, but did win the Critics Choice Award for Best Young Actor/Actress in December. He’ll be competing against Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Dev Patel (Lion), and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) for the Supporting Actor Oscar on Feb. 26.

Of the major players who earned nominations for Manchester, Hedges is the only first-time honoree. Casey Affleck was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Gone Baby Gone (2007), Michelle Williams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Best Actress in Blue Valentine (2010) and My Week With Marilyn (2011), and Kenneth Lonergan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for You Can Count on Me (2000) and Gangs of New York (2002).

“It’s been probably the craziest morning of my life,” Hedges told People. “The Oscars are the Holy Grail, and for whatever crazy reason I can’t explain I got nominated — I don’t know how to explain it.”
