Trailer for new Gus Van Sant movie filmed in Mass. released
The trailer for a new Gus Van Sant film made in Massachusetts was released ahead of the film’s major theater debut later this month.
Van Sant, who also directed Good Will Hunting, filmed much the of his latest film, The Sea of Trees, around Worcester and in the F. Gilbert Hills State Forest in Foxborough. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as a professor who travels to Japan to sort out a personal crisis and Naomi Watts, who plays his wife. While in the woods of Japan, McConaughey meets a lost man (played by Ken Watanabe), and the two embark on a spiritual journey together.
When the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France last year, it received mostly negative reviews. While the film’s poor critical reception led some to wonder if The Sea of Trees would make it to theaters, the independent film company A24 has since picked it up, and the film is slated to hit theaters August 26.
