Kate Mara and Ed Helms added to the cast of Ted Kennedy movie ‘Chappaquiddick’
They join Jason Clarke, who will play the former U.S. senator.
Chappaquiddick
, an upcoming independent flick about U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy’s scandal on Martha’s Vineyard in 1969, has added two names to its cast: Kate Mara (The Martian) and Ed Helms (The Hangover), according to Deadline.
The two join Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), who is starring in the lead role as Kennedy. He’ll portray the former senator during the summer of 1969, when he got into a car accident on Chappaquiddick, the affluent island connected by ferry to the Vineyard. Kennedy’s car veered off a bridge, going into a channel. Mary Jo Kopechne, who was Kennedy’s passenger in the car, drowned.
Mara will play Kopechne in the movie, according to Deadline. Helms will portray Kennedy’s cousin, Joe Gargan, who, together with Kennedy, cohosted the party on Chappaquiddick that Kennedy was departing from at the time of the accident.
Chappaquiddick is one of a few different movies and TV series in the works about the Kennedys. Matthew Perry and Katie Holmes are starring in The Kennedys: After Camelot, a follow-up to the 2011 Reelz series, The Kennedys; Emma Stone is set to star as Rosemary Kennedy in an upcoming biopic about the sister to JFK; and Natalie Portman is playing Jackie O. in a movie coming out in 2017 titled Jackie.
