Massachusetts has one of the Northeast’s top small towns for visiting, according to USA Today.
Mashpee was ranked No. 4 on the list of 10 destinations, with its freshwater ponds and the trails around the Mashpee River Reservation being singled out.
“Mashpee seamlessly combines natural charm with cultural significance, and it embraces its Wampanoag roots, encouraging visitors to learn more at the Mashpee Wampanoag Museum,” the USA Today blurb reads on the Cape Cod town.
Mashpee followed Lambertville, N.J. (No. 3), Wellsboro, Penn. (No. 2), and Ohiopyle, Penn. (No. 1) in the rankings, but it wasn’t the only New England town on the list. Montpelier, Vt. was ranked No. 7, selected for the way it “exudes easy living” with outdoor recreation, festivals, and food markets all recognized with the result of a “small town with a big presence,” according to USA Today.
According to the publication, the small towns that made the list were selected by an expert panel and voted for by readers. Each has a population of fewer than 25,000.
