Legal Sea Foods took home the golden Battle of the Bites trophy for being the favorite clam chowder despite a tight race on Thursday’s “Drew Barrymore Show.”
During the talk show Barrymore, Ross Mathews, and three virtual guest judges taste-tested local clam chowders — from Legal Sea Foods, Boston Sail Loft, and Yankee Lobster Company — to decide a winner.

‘It’s a bit of mixed emotions’: Legal Sea Foods CEO Roger Berkowitz announces the sale of Legal to PPX Hospitality Brands
“Yah like Chowda?” Barrymore asked Mathews, kicking off the competition with a classic Boston accent.
Mathews explained how as a kid, he wasn’t the biggest fan of the creamy soup, but added that he was optimistic about how much his taste buds have changed since then.
“I cook every single day, so I would love to have a reimagining of chowder,” he said.
Judges dipped into Legal Sea Foods’ dish first, which CEO Roger Berkowitz said has been served at every presidential inaugural since 1981.
“Hold on, I’ve been sleeping on chowder,” Mathews commented after taking his first bite.
As everyone made their way through the other two contenders, they shared thoughts about each and discussed the varying flavor palettes before voting.
A Twitter poll running in the background also allowed viewers to vote on their favorites, which Barrymore said revealed a tight race, yet Legal Sea Foods reigned with 38.9% of the final tally.
Barrymore picked Legal Sea Foods as her winner before turning to Mathews for his final choice.
“I actually liked all three when I came in not knowing if I’d like any, but there was one that I think was the perfect one,” he said as he plucked the Legal Sea Foods sign and matched Barrymore’s vote. “There’s nothing I would change.”
In the end, one virtual judge voted for Yankee Lobster Co. and the other two voted for Boston Sail Loft.

In honor of National Soup Month, Legal Sea Foods said it will be celebrating “Chowda Day” on Friday, with all proceeds benefiting the Boston Children’s Hospital.
“Enjoy a cup of clam chowder for $1,” the company said on its website. “Because our clam chowder is still #1.”
