The Godmother of Punk is coming to Boston.

Patti Smith, the legendary singer-songwriter and punk-rock poet, is scheduled to perform at the Orpheum Theatre on Friday, April 26.

A fixture of New York’s burgeoning punk rock scene in the ’70s, Smith is best known for her debut album, “Horses,’’ and her hit single written by Bruce Springsteen, “Because the Night.’’

Smith’s most recent album, “Banga,’’ was released in 2012. Over the past decade, she has focused her efforts on writing. Her memoir, “Just Kids,’’ won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2010. The book chronicled her relationship with the late artist Robert Mapplethorpe.
