New chief curator for Harvard Art Museums
Soyoung Lee currently serves as curator in Asian art at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Harvard Art Museums have announced the appointment of Soyoung Lee as chief curator. She currently serves as curator in Asian art at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met hired her in 2003 as its first curator for Korean art. Lee, 46, has a doctorate in art history from Columbia University, as well as her undergraduate and master’s degrees from there. She has arranged several international loan exhibitions for the Met, including “Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom’’ and “Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art.’’ An indication of Lee’s curatorial range is her current involvement in two high-profile cross-departmental exhibitions at the Met, “Jewelry: The Body Transformed,’’ which opens this fall, and a celebration of the museum’s 150th anniversary, in 2020. Lee assumes her Harvard post in September.
