Yankee Magazine says this Massachusetts landmark is a quintessential autumn destination
New England’s fall foliage is arriving a bit later than usual this year, which means you still have time to plan a leaf peeping trip in the region. But that also means that the coming days will be full of tourists and locals flocking to some of the New England’s best fall foliage spots.
If you’re looking for a great place to see brilliantly colorful leaves without fighting through crowds, the experts at Yankee Magazine recommend taking a trip to Bartholomew’s Cobble, a Trustees of Reservations site in the southwest region of Massachusetts near the Connecticut border.
“Walk on the Ledges Trail, and you’ll spot the Housatonic River snaking through dairy farms to the left while eroding limestone and quartzite rocks form the cobble to your right,” the magazine wrote in its October issue. “A worthy detour at Corbin’s Neck rewards you with a close-up view of the river and the cows resting on its banks.”
The magazine also recommends hiking through a forest of hemlocks on the Tulip Tree Trail and taking in views of Mount Everett and Mount Race, part of the Appalachian Trail.
If you’re planning on making the trip, leave yourself plenty of time: The drive to Bartholomew’s Cobble from Boston takes a little under three hours, on average.
