Why this local cab driver is the Bostonian of the Week

Presenting our weekly shoutout to someone special in the city.

Welcome to Bostonian of the Week, a weekly Boston.com series in which we give a giant high five to someone who’s done our fair city proud. This could be anyone in, around, or associated with Boston—from a wellness-obsessed supermodel wife of the town’s star quarterback to a little girl with a gibberish-laden sign at the Boston Marathon to the many other personalities that crop up around us in the news. The good eggs are out there, people.

A Boston taxi driver named Raymond “Buzzy” MacCausland was in the news this week for returning a lost backpack with $187,000 in cash to Boston Police Headquarters on Friday. The backpack was found in the backseat of his cab.

Police said they received a call from a passenger who left the money behind, reporting a lost backpack. The passenger was the beneficiary of a trust and recently inherited the money, according to a Boston police spokesperson.

MacCausland was rewarded for his virtue: Royal Caribbean Cruises contacted MacCausland on Wednesday to give him a trip to the Caribbean free of charge. The offer was part of Royal Caribbean’s “Ticket to Adventure” program, which gives free vacations to people who are documented doing good deeds.

It’s not $187,000, but it’s something.

“This hackney driver exhibited exemplary behavior and his honest deed should be recognized,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said on Tuesday. “His actions represent the high standards that our department has for our drivers.”
