A Worcester mom baked this Bernie cake to celebrate her son’s voting-age birthday

Call it a Bern-thday treat.

Indiana Messier of Worcester reached voting age on Sunday, just in time for the Massachusetts primary elections next month. To celebrate, his mother, Nicole Messier, the owner of Butter Box Bakery, tailor-made him a birthday treat in the spirit of the occasion: a cake decorated with the campaign logo of Indiana’s favorite presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders.

“He gave me a big hug and said, ‘You are by far my favorite person today,’’’ Nicole said of Indiana’s reaction to the Bernie cake. “He was really excited. Which was nice.’’

On Sunday, Indiana posted a photo of his birthday treat to a Bernie Sanders-related Facebook group where it quickly gained traction. The photo was later removed from the page for violating the page’s rules and guidelines. (Technically, the photo wasn’t a meme, and thus Indiana’s post couldn’t stay up.) But word had gotten out about the cake, and people were into it – prior to its deletion, the picture had garnered upwards of 7,000 likes, according to Nicole.

The enthusiasm about the cake has been redirected to Nicole’s business. As of Wednesday afternoon, a photo of the cake posted directly to the Butter Box Bakery Facebook page had amassed more than 19,000 likes.

“I’ve had people as far away as Norway asking if they could have [a cake] shipped to them,’’ Nicole said, adding that folks in California and the Carolinas have also asked for Butter Box creations.

Nicole said that her treats can’t withstand long-distance shipping, but that anyone is welcome to come pick up their custom cake. Butter Box also delivers within a two-hour radius of Worcester – unless you’re very special.

“If Bernie reached out himself,’’ Nicole said, “I’d totally deliver one to his campaign headquarters.’’

Though she would gladly make the Vermont senator a cake in his likeness, Nicole said she is currently undecided in her choice for president.

“It’s not a political stance,’’ Nicole said of her Bernie cake. “It’s just something cool I wanted to do for my son, and it made him happy on his 18th birthday.’’
