When Boston residents dine out, they go all out—with tipping.

Boston diners are the best tippers in the U.S., according to a new study from Google and Zagat that looked at “the state of American dining.’’

Nationwide, Americans average an 18.9 percent tip, but Boston goes above and beyond, tipping an average of 20 percent. The worst tippers in the States? The citizens of San Antonio, who leave an average of 17.1 percent.

Unfortunately, Boston also averages one of the highest costs of going out to eat. New York tops that list with a reported average of $48.44 for dinner per person; Boston comes in at $43, still higher than the national average of $36 for a meal out.

Boston diners may spend a lot when they go out on the town, but according to the survey, residents here dine out less frequently than anywhere else. Not counting breakfast, the national average for going out for a meal is 4.5 times per week; in Boston, it’s only 3.8 times per week.
