Dive In: High-style pools

A 2,000-square-foot Vermont house is uber-green and tons of fun, mostly thanks to the pool, which is the center of all family “staycations.”
It may be a balmy Boston day, but here at the DNE office, it’s a steady, shiveringly-cold 65 degrees. On days like these it’s impossible not to daydream, just for a minute, about blissfully summer spaces where sunshine glistens on a water’s surface. And when we’re talking mid-July heat and humidity, all I want is a day spent by the pool. So this is my compromise — sharing some of the most refreshing spaces we’ve featured.

Billowing sheer curtains give the pool and pavilion (above, from July/Aug 08) a romantic, relaxed ambiance. Tucked behind the main house, the pool compound (below, from May/June 11) was conceived as emerging from the landscape, and features sheltered boarders ripe with color in the summer.

The pool (above, from March/April 10) is tucked into the landscape of a 1898 Newport mansion. An extensive restoration extended outdoors, as a playful replica of an old structure on the property makes for a charming pool house (below, from Sept/Oct 10).

The deck leads down to a bluestone terrace and pool (above, from July/Aug 11) for this family-centric summer home. Chippendale garden furniture, classical urns, and pavilion add an exuberant flair to the pool (below, from May/June 09).
