Boston’s first treadmill running studio opens this weekend

It’s like an indoor cycling studio, but with treadmills.

Tie up those sneaks, running buffs who so proudly call this city home. A new and actually motivating way to get a treadmill workout is coming to Boston, thanks to MyStryde, the city’s very first “running studio.’’

Its mission is exactly what it sounds like: Similar to the way gyms and studios offer cycling classes, MyStryde is a dedicated studio for treadmill running. Participants can hop on a machine in a group setting and engage in a running workout led by an instructor.

While a similar concept exists in New York City, MyStryde founder and owner Rebecca Skudder, a Boston resident, was determined to make MyStryde the first of its kind in New England. The idea came to her while she was training for a half marathon at the gym during nasty weather. (Bostonians can certainly empathize with that.)

“The running community here is so a) huge and b) supportive, and [has] a pumped-up environment with the Boston Marathon,’’ she said. “It was kind of a no-brainer to me.’’

MyStryde, located in the North End, will offer a bunch of different classes, including one called “Stryde,’’ a faster-paced, small interval workout; “Endurance,’’ a slow-paced, long interval run; and then others like Boot Camp (high intensity), Power Walk (less pounding), and Hills (higher inclines). Monthly packages range from $60 to $190. Packages for those training for a race — from a 5K up to a marathon — are also available.

Sure, running in a group setting can seem intimidating—going slowly for one person can feel crazy fast to the next. But Skudder explained that the classes will work at a “level system’’; each runner can go at the pace that best fits them.

Each treadmill at the studio will have a laminated card that will show different levels in three categories: beginners, intermediate, and advance.

“The instructor will work on a scale from one to five,’’ Skudder said. “One is your warmup, or recovery, pace. So if the instructor says, ‘Hey, let’s all start at a level one,’ for beginners, that’s a walking pace, and for advance runners, that’s going to be a six or seven [miles per hour] on the treadmill.’’

MyStryde opens this Saturday, January 9, with a few “nice and easy’’ classes, Skudder said. The following week will also have a light schedule, and by the end of the month, the studio is expected be up and running with a full schedule.
