NIH says nearly 10 percent of Americans have had a drug use disorder
The National Institutes of Health reported Wednesday that almost 10 percent of Americans have had a drug use disorder in their lifetime.
But of the more than 23 million American adults who have dealt with the disorder, 75 percent said they never received treatment, according to a report by Stat.
“We need to have clinicians doing better at recognizing these problems, and we need to educate doctors and potential patients alike that drug treatment is effective,’’ Bridget Grant, a senior investigator at the NIH, told Stat.
The disorder is diagnosed by looking at symptoms that include withdrawal and the neglect of professional and personal responsibilities.
