Two Maine entrepreneurs are turning lobster traps into high-end sunglasses

Two Maine entrepreneurs are working to make Maine fashion about more than flannel shirts and Bean boots, according to the Portland Press Herald.

John Turner, 26, of Harpswell, and Daniel Dougherty, of Yarmouth, founded Traps Eyewear, a Portland-based company that is making high-end sun glasses out of quintessential Maine lobster traps, two years ago, the Press Herald reports. Since its official launch party about a year ago, the duo has sold about 300 pairs.

The wood is used to make the sunglasses’ temple pieces, which holds the glasses in place when tucked behind the wearer’s ears. Each pair can range from $240 for the hardwood brand to $285 for the Kennedy-inspired The Jack line, according to the Press Herald.

Turner told the Press Herald he came up with the idea when he was walking on South Portland’s Willard Beach and came upon a washed-up wooden lobster trap.

“I loved the idea of telling a story about Maine, and its heritage,” he said. “I loved the idea of turning something old, something salvaged, into a beautiful fashion statement. Fashion from Maine.”
