Here’s the super-limited New Balance 3D-printed running shoe
The local athletic company says this sneaker is the first of its kind.
New Balance recently released two pairs of Boston-themed running sneakers, and now the Brighton-based footwear manufacturer has unveiled its latest trick.
On April 15, New Balance will release the first high performance running shoe with a 3D-printed midsole, according to the company. Dubbed “Zante Generate,” the shoes will retail for $400.
Only 44 pairs of the sneakers will be released, a nod to New Balance Owner and Chairman Jim Davis, who purchased the company on Patriot’s Day in 1972, 44 years ago. They’ll be available online and at the New Balance Experience Store on Boylston Street.
New Balance collaborated with 3D Systems, a 3D printing and manufacturing company based in Andover, to develop the shoe’s midsole out of their newly developed material, Duraform Flex TPU, which creates a balance of flexibility, strength, weight, and durability, according to New Balance.
“New Balance is at the forefront of 3D printing and has been utilizing this exciting and innovative technology to customize product for our athletes for a number of years,” New Balance President and CEO Robert DeMartini said in a press release. “Our unique position as both a manufacturer and retailer allows us to bring the world’s first 3D printed running midsole to market.”
