UNIQLO opened its first Boston store at Faneuil Hall on Friday with long lines and live performances.

The Japanese clothing retailer, owned by Fast Retailing, opened 17 U.S. stores last year, but slowed expansion this year, with only five new stores planned, the Financial Times reported.

The brand is known for its simple styles at affordable prices. The new Faneuil Hall location comes after the success of the pop-up store there that opened over a year ago. The company now has five Massachusetts locations, most located in suburban malls.

The Financial Times reported Thursday that the company is struggling with it’s suburban locations where the brand recognition is weaker. “The brand penetration in big cities such as New York, San Francisco and Chicago — where we will open a new store – is good, but not in the suburbs,’’ Tadashi Yanai, chief executive at UNIQLO, told the newspaper.
