J.Crew Enters the Fragrance Market

Starting Monday, J. Crew is entering the fragrance market with two new scents, created with small-batch perfumery Arquiste. The retailer worked with master perfumer Carlos Huber to create the fragrances, citing Peggy Guggenheim’s revolutionary all-female gallery show “Exhibition by 31 Women’’ in 1943 as inspiration.

According to a release from the retailer, the perfumes — named No. 57 and No. 31 — will “capture the most evocative moments in history’’ and draw “on the scents of the strong cocktails and bold perfumes that filled the night’’ of the show’s opening.

But what do they smell like?

No. 57 is a unisex fragrance, “inspired by the woody scent of the gallery’s curved oak walls and the aromatic cocktails that filled the room.’’ Unsurprisingly, notes include aged whiskey, cedarwood, and vanilla. No. 31 was “inspired by the provocative perfumes worn by guests’’ and “captures the essence and excitement of the avant-garde crowd.’’ This means patchouli, Bulgarian rose, and red vermouth.

Both scents will be available as a 1.7 fl. oz. bottle for $78 and a 0.34 fl. oz. rollerball for $25 at J.Crew store locations and jcrew.com beginning on Monday.
