8 couture looks we totally want to see at the Grammys
-
Haute Couture week has come to a close in Paris, and the Grammy Awards are coming up this weekend, so we thought we’d kill two birds with one stone and educate you on the eight shows you should be aware of and the eight nominated musical muses we think should be wearing their designs at the show.
-
Chanel
Karl Lagerfeld’s couture collection was a cheeky, whimsical trip that straddled the line of proper and punk — complete with custom tweed trainers.
-
Lorde
We’d like to see a piece of Chanel on pop music’s newest darling, who once told Teen Vogue: “I like simple clothes, but sometimes I’ll go for a goth-witch vibe.’’ Lorde is up for four awards this year and will perform, as well.
-
Elie Saab
Saab designs sparkling, breathtaking gowns that are fit for a princess — and this season is (obviously) no different. The designer told WWD that the floral-heavy collection was “inspired by the Victorian painter’s oeuvre.’’
-
Taylor Swift
Swifty is up for her second Album of the Year nod with “Red,’’ so it only feels appropriate that she dresses the part.
-
Atelier Versace
It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Donatella Versace’s return to haute couture. Actually, it was just in 2012, but the idea of it all feels fresh as ever. The collection feels like it was made for the bold, brash, sexy red carpet at the Grammys — with one particular songstress in mind — and as noted in the program, Donatella was inspired by “the elegance and power of the contemporary goddess.’’
-
Lady Gaga
Gaga is the face of Versace, so it only makes sense she wears a gown from the collection. The “ARTPOP’’ singer wasn’t nominated this year so she might as well toot her own horn in her latest high fashion conquest.
-
Oscar Carvallo
Carvallo’s dizzying designs were said to be inspired by artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, but we think they looked awfully like the darker end of the spectrum from Chanel’s rainbow-heavy Spring ready-to-wear collection.
-
Katy Perry
Perry’s up with two nods for “Roar,’’ and in true Katy fashion, we think it would be only appropriate if she dressed in “Prism’’ theme.
-
Alexandre Vauthier
Is there anyone sexier on the couture market? Vauthier was behind Gisele’s body skimming mini dress at last year’s MET Ball and for the spring couture collection, the aesthetic continues: What it lacks in fabric, it makes up for in vision. Deemed “surf fetishism’’ by Style.com, the collection reads like a cool girls club, wallflowers should pass.
-
Miley Cyrus
Who would be better than Miley to wear Vauthier? The collection takes extreme confidence and major personality to pull off — and, well, she’s just being Miley.
-
Christian Dior
Raf Simons’s airy couture collection was most definitely all about movement. “Everything shook or shimmied,’’ reported Style.com.
-
Sara Bareilles
Barielles may take home the big prize of the night for Album of the Year with “Blessed Unrest’’ — and she’s set to perform during the show. We think it’s about time that girlfriend gets herself some couture.
-
Valentino
Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli’s spring couture collection was described as having “a surrealist vibe, at once enchanting and wacky,’’ by Women’s Wear Daily. A vibe that was both romantic in nature and romantic about nature
-
Florence Welch
Welch lent her vocals on nominated track, “Sweet Nothing’’ by Calvin Haris, and since she was spotted in the front row at Valentino during couture week, we have no doubt the songbird will wear the design house on award night.
-
Schiaparelli
The return of Schiaparelli after a 60 year hiatus was met by anxious critics who wanted to see if the new creative director, Marco Zanini (formerly of Rochas), was up for the challenge. “… a fine effort, using the codes of the house, but not in a superficial way,’’ wrote The New York Times’s Suzy Menkes. “The new Schiap collection seemed authentically elegant in a whimsical way…. The ‘flou,’ or fluid, clothes seemed more successful than the slightly lumpy reversible tailoring, but this collection still turns a new haute couture page.’’
-
Kacey Musgraves
The 25-year-old country star is up for four prestigious awards on Grammy night. She snagged Best Country Album, Best New Artist — the only lady among the pack — and managed to find herself going head-to-head with herself, with two nods in the Best Country Song category. She’s buzzworthy, beautiful, and clearly a force to be reckoned with — if Schiaparelli wants to dress someone as electrifying as their label was 60 years ago, Musgraves is the one to be after.
