People’s Choice Awards 2014: Style superlatives

Nothing really gets us excited about the red carpet at the People’s Choice Awards. Given its close proximity to big ticket award shows, we find that most attendees rarely bother to bring their A-game to the show.

The 40th annual show was held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Jan. 8 and was hosted by “Two Broke Girls’’ stars Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings — taking over after a two-year run by “Big Bang Theory’’ actress Kaley Cuoco — who both looked great. This was a pleasant surprise.

And there were others. Some great, some not so great, all worth mentioning. Here are our thoughts on the night.

Best dressed person we totally forgot was pregnant

Drew Barrymore in Vionnet

The “Going the Distance’’ actress opted for a sunny two-tone gown rather than the typical bump-concealing shapeless dresses we see on most moms-to-be. The 38-year-old revealed in November that she was expecting her second child with husband Will Kopelman.

Most improved

Emily Deschanel in Max Azria

The Deschanel sisters have been long time victims of our worst dressed wrath during award season. But for every overly quirky, poorly executed pouf misstep taken by Zooey, her older sister Emily is over to the left of the red carpet, wearing something twenty times worse. This was surprisingly nice and flattering and we were happy to finally see Emily — nine seasons of “Bones’’ later — shine.

Favorite surprising silhouette of the night

The “Mom’’ actress somehow pulled off sparkly pants and a boxy top in a bland shade so we have to give her props.

Best menswear trend for an award show that isn’t really an awards show

Blue suiting

Save your tuxedos for the Oscars — we love seeing guys opt for dapper alternative during the pre-big-gun-award-shows-award-show season. “That Awkward Moment’’ actor Michael B. Jordan’s crisp Lanvin and Zac “I broke my jaw, but now I appear to be OK’’ Efron’s George Clinton suits were both stellar. “Arrow’’ actor Stephen Amell and “Big Bang Theory’’ star Kunal Nayyar echoed the sentiment.

Best color trend of the night

White on white on white

Forget winter white. There was plenty of stark bright white on the red carpet and there was nothing bridal, ethereal, or romantic about it. And the best part of it all: Everyone pulled it off! Really, really well!

Taylor Spreitler in an AQ/AQ crop top and a sheer striped Waldrip skirt, Jessica Alba in a bodycon Jason Wu, and Jennifer Hudson in sleek Kaufmanfranco all looked awesome.

If this is any sign for what’s to come from the “Gravity’’ star for the upcoming award season, we’re excited to see what her stylist has in store. Bullock looked event appropriate, drop dead gorgeous, and photo-ready in this dress that could have gone horribly wrong on pretty much anyone else.

The “Brave’’ songstress wore a darling black and white Jil Stuart dress that we loved as well but her shoes really took the cake.
