Bad news if you were planning on attending Lilac Sunday or Duckling Day this weekend
Mother Nature is behind the cancellation of two popular Mother’s Day events in Boston this year. The Duckling Day parade and Lilac Sunday, both planned for Sunday, have been called off due to a rainy forecast.
The Duckling Day parade, a Boston tradition for more than 30 years, is a celebration of the classic book Make Way for Ducklings by local author Robert McCloskey. During the event, which draws hundreds of people, children dressed as characters from the book parade through Boston’s parks, led by Harvard’s marching band. Before the parade, families get to participate in activities like crafts and face-painting.
“Sadly, this year’s Duckling Day is CANCELLED due to anticipated severe weather and recommendation of city officials,” wrote Friends of the Public Garden, the organizer of the event, on Facebook. “If you have already registered, you’ll be receiving an email shortly. Even ducks shelter for the strongest rains — Stay dry this Mother’s Day!”

The 109th Annual Lilac Sunday, a day when families tour the hundreds of lilacs at Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum and also take part in family fun, has been called off, as well. However, the arboretum will offer a scaled back schedule of events on Saturday.
“Events on Sunday, May 14 have been cancelled due to severe weather,” wrote the Arnold Arboretum on its website. “We regret any inconvenience. A modified slate of tours and activities will be offered on Saturday, May 13.”
Tours of the lilacs and other activities will take place Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Food trucks will not be part of Saturday’s festivities due to the schedule change, according to the announcement.
