If you spot pants-less MBTA commuters on Sunday, here’s why

If your Sunday plans involve riding the MBTA, you might wind up sharing a block of seats with a guy in boxer briefs.

The 10th Annual “No Pants Subway Ride,” taking place Sunday at 2 p.m., could bring scores of pants-less riders to your commute. The event is planned each year by BostonSOS (Society of Shenanigans), the group behind the city’s flash mobs, pranks such as First Class Subway during which a bevy of butlers served MBTA riders hors d’oeuvres and hot towels, and Boston’s Midnight Marathon Bike Ride.

Participants will begin in Boston’s Pemberton Square, where they’ll be assigned a train. Once on board, they’ll strip down to their skivvies.

The participants are told, in an online video, to bring “two pairs of underwear, for warmth and modesty. Or three, because, you know, winter.” Shirt and shoes are required.

“The point isn’t to offend, but to make people laugh,” James Cobalt of BostonSOS says in the video.

The “No Pants Subway Ride” first launched in New York City in 2002 by Improv Everywhere and now takes place in cities around the world.
