A Philadelphia soul band will take over City Hall Plaza on August 24

Get ready for a night of Philly soul in the heart of Boston.The final Dorothy Curran Wednesday Night Concert Series event will feature Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes on Wednesday, August 24, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department announced in a statement Friday.The event, showcasing the “charismatic Philly band,” will start at 7 p.m. and take place at City Hall Plaza.Formed as Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1954, the band rose to fame in the ’70s when drummer Teddy Pendergrass joined the group and then became the lead singer, according to the statement. The band is known for hits including “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” “Where Are All My Friends,” “Wake Up Everybody,” and “Bad Luck.”Pendergrass and Melvin passed away in 2010 and 1997, respectively, and the group now consists of Donnell Gillespie, Rufus Thorne, Anthony Brooks, John Morris, and vocalist Sharon Paige, who joined the band in 1975, according to the Parks and Recreation Department.The free outdoor concert series, which has been running for 44 years, is hosted by Mayor Martin Walsh in collaboration with the Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment, and the Department of Parks and Recreation.Three previous events in the series included a Beatles tribute, a disco party featuring Tavares, and a disco night featuring Stardust.
