HUBweek’s Brew the Charles event brings the river to your beer (literally)
We know Bostonians love that dirty water, but what will they say when it’s in their beer? That is what HUBweek wants to find out. The festival, celebrating “innovation at the intersection of art, science, and technology,” announced its new Brew the Charles competition in partnership with Desalitech, where six local Massachusetts breweries will turn water from the Charles River into beer. The idea for the competition came from last year’s HUBweek event with Harpoon Brewery, which collaborated with Desalitech to brew a limited edition Charles River Pale Ale, according to a statement by HUBweek. Boston Beer Company, Harpoon Brewery, Cape Ann Brewing Company, Castle Island Brewing Co., Idle Hands Craft Ales, and Ipswich Ale Brewery will all participate in the challenge to “turn science into beer.”Desalitech, a Newton-based water technology company, will treat around 4,000 gallons of Charles River water using reverse osmosis, a purification process that uses increased pressure to force water through a filter and allows certain types of molecules to pass through but blocks others, said Nadav Efraty, CEO of the company. “We wanted to create something interesting to raise awareness about the importance of water efficiency,” Efraty said. “It’s a fun way to tell an important story.”Efraty said the water will be of high quality, entirely safe to drink, and certified by third parties. According to HUBweek, the beers will be judged by an expert panel, the audience, and the brewers themselves during the event. A prize will be awarded to the best Charles River HUBweek brew. The Brew the Charles event will occur on September 30 from 5 to 10 p.m. and will cost $25. This registration fee comes with a sampling of up to 12 beers, HUBweek said. A part of the proceeds will benefit the Charles River Conservancy’s “Swim the Charles” campaign. HUBweek was founded by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Mass General Hospital in 2015. It will last from September 25 to October 1., and host around 50,000 participants, according to its website.
