Atul Gawande, surgeon and writer, will join Mindy Kaling’s September 15 Harvard Book Store event. The Boston Globe

Those planning to attend Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Harvard Book Store event promoting her new book Why Not Me? will get to see not one but two bestselling authors.

Atul Gawande, renowned author and surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will join Kaling at the Back Bay Events Center on September 15.

Gawande’s most recent book, Being Mortal, tackles death, dying, and the medical system—a slightly different subject matter than the essays in Kaling’s Why Not Me?, such as “How to Look Spectacular: A Starlet’s Confessions.’’

Then again, Kaling’s TV persona does play an OB/GYN, and her mother was a doctor. So maybe the two do share something besides literary prowess.

Whatever common ground they find to discuss, the event promises to be an interesting one.

Gawande seems to be game for a good time.
