Brattle Theater to honor ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper with showings of ‘They Live’
“Rowdy’’ Roddy Piper didn’t only have fans in the squared circle. This weekend, a local theater will celebrate his best work in film.
Recently, the wrestling world said goodbye to the fan favorite and former intercontinental champion, who passed away due to cardiac arrest at 61.
Piper, born Roderick Toombs, also starred in the 1988 sci-fi action film, They Live.

To honor the fallen wrestling great, Harvard Square’s Brattle Theater will screen the film Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights at 9:30.
“We’re showing it because he passed recently, but also because it’s a great movie,’’ said operations manager Gabriel Moylan.
As an independent theater, the Brattle was able to pay tribute quickly. “We’re indie, so we control our own programming. It was easy, so we decided to do it now.’’
Directed by John Carpenter and distributed by Universal, They Live posted earnings of $13 million on a $3 million budget. The film, which boasts an 83 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was ranked #18 on Entertainment Weekly’s “The Cult 25: The Essential Left-Field Movie Hits Since ‘83’’ list, helped launch a film career for Piper that spanned four decades, with one posthumous release slated for next year.
Tickets are available through the Brattle Theater’s website, as well as at the theater’s box office.
