Boston is overrun with bunnies—both real, furry rabbits, and now massive inflatable ones.

Five two-story-tall bunnies have taken over the grounds of Lawn on D, the outdoor event space in South Boston.

The display, called Intrude, was created by Australian artist Amanda Parer. These bunnies have been all around the world—Intrude was showcased in multiple Australian locations, along with England, France, Canada, Belgium, Scotland, Denmark, and Italy—and were inspired by the real rabbits that swarm her home country.

“I called them Intrude because I wanted them to look like they just hopped into a place and made themselves at home, or intruded onto a space,’’ said Parer . “The rabbits first came with white colonials in 1788 to Australia and so they’ve been out of control ever since and just causing lots of destruction.’’

It may not be an obviously environmentally-conscious piece of artwork—Parer said she also likes to use the imagery of rabbits because they evoke memories of childhood stories and thus seem cute and approachable—but that discussion is important to Parer.

“The idea is that there’s not a lot of forethought with how we treat the environment, and a lot of mismanagement,’’ she said. “Introduced species sort of dominating and overtaking an environment is kind of a metaphor for us and where we are today environmentally.’’

The nearly 16.5 by 23 foot glowing rabbits will grace the grass of Lawn on D this weekend. Check here for times.
