“SNL” returned to the air for the 16th episode of its 51st season on Saturday, April 4, with Jack Black as host and Jack White as musical guest.

Black was hosting “SNL” for the fifth time, joining the illustrious five-timers club almost exactly one year after his last hosting gig, on April 5, 2025.

As it happens, Black was also the host of one of my favorite “SNL” episodes of all time, which aired on Dec. 17, 2005.

That episode featured the debut of Two A-Holes, a hilarious 10-to-1 sketch (Spelling Bee), a TV Funhouse classic (Christmastime for the Jews) and Lazy Sunday, the digital short from Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell that popularized a then-fledgling streaming platform called YouTube.

This time around, Black began the night with one of the show’s customary cameo-heavy five-timers sketches. After being welcomed into the exclusive club by fellow five-timers Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, Candice Bergen, and Melissa McCarthy, Black was joined by White, who was serving as musical guest for a fifth time (sixth if you count his lone appearance with The White Stripes).

True to form, Black lifted the energy of what has become a somewhat tired premise by launching into an SNL-ified version of “Seven Nation Army,” accompanied by White and a team of dancers. (Spoiler alert: If you’re a fan of Black’s music-based comedy, this episode has you covered.)
