Singer Jon Batiste performed a powerful rendition of the National Anthem at Super Bowl LIX, kicking off the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in style.
Sporting an all-black suit and sitting at a piano, the Grammy-winning musician’s heartfelt performance was met by loud applause and cheers from the crowd assembled at the Superdome in New Orleans.
Batiste is a native of Louisiana, and his family tree is full of musicians: Lionel Batiste of the Treme Brass Band, Milton Batiste of the Olympia Brass Band, and Russell Batiste Jr. are a few of Batiste’s relatives who are well-known New Orleans musicians.
Batiste’s performance stirred emotions from both the players and the crowd. Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones used a tissue to wipe away tears, and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni closed his eyes and swayed to the beat.
An emotional Chris Jones during the National Anthem.

There was also an audible reaction when the cameras cut to President Donald Trump, who stood at attention saluting the flag.
Batiste’s rendition of the National Anthem was the final performance in a packed pregame schedule filled by Louisiana natives.
Prior to the Star-Spangled Banner came a beautiful rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by singer Ledisi and a performance of “America the Beautiful” by Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle.
