“SNL” returned to the air for the 11th episode of its 50th season on Jan. 18, with veteran comedian Dave Chappelle as host and GloRilla as musical guest.
The “Saturday Night Live” writing staff is no doubt currently hard at work on the three-hour 50th anniversary special set to air on Sunday, Feb. 16, so having Chappelle as host must have been a relief.
That’s because Chappelle, appearing for the fourth time as host, is always good for an extra-long standup monologue.
Indeed, Chappelle’s standup set stretched for 17 minutes, only leaving time for four post-monologue sketches. One of them, “Immigrant Dad Talk Show,” was a reprise of a 2019 sketch, and another, “Pop the Balloon,” was carried by characters from Chappelle’s influential sketch series “Chappelle’s Show” — player-hating pimp Silky Johnson (Chappelle) and moisture-starved projects legend Ashy Larry (Donnell Rawlings)
